If you want to learn Java, I definitely recommend it. (Somehow, I thought you already were a proficient programmer. Hmm.) If you need help with anything Java related, let me know and I'll try to help you. (Hah.) The best reference I can think of (besides the online help files) would be Mr Ridout's textbook -- it really explains all you need to know for basic Java, and extending your scope after that is really easy.
