I look forward to reading your actual inspection on friendship. Somehow, I thought this entry DID reflect your views on the subject. Funny, eh? What was I thinking.

Yes, it does seem like a circular argument... to the extent that it's not really an argument at all. The point was to emphasize the main idea, which I'm sure you understand, you're a clever person. I considered changing it after I typed it but it sounds funny so I left it as is.

Personally, I like it when members of other religions try to preach to me. It indicates that other people care enough about me that they would like to save me from what they see as an eternal punishment. Besides, spiritual discussions -- even with people of different faiths -- can be highly refreshing.

"Friends are good, if they're good friends". That's a circular argument, isn't it?

One more thing: I'm not sure that atheism is "the best way of going about life", but it's not like I'm going to force my beliefs on others. I can stand other religions except when they try to preach to me.

I totally agree with everything you wrote.

That's why later on today I'll be publishing my inspection of friendship, which will somewhat contradict what I've written here, but will also build on it.

If you think you have to conform to have friends, they aren't really your friends, are they? They'd be friends with the person they want you to be. A real friend would like you for who you are, without expecting you to change. That is probably a very trite way of putting it, but you shouldn't have to change your ideals to match your friends'.

That being said, you can't expect to always remain the same, whether or not you have friends. You will change, like it or not, and it is true that your friends will influence that. But, you'd change anyways even if you were a loner.

So, basically, friends are good, if they're good friends. Keep your beliefs and ideologies, your friends should accept you because of them, not in spite of them. That being said, are you sure atheism is the best way of going about life?
