Murphy’s Technology Laws

April 29th, 2008 | Comments Off | Posted in Web Matters

Some of the quotes mentioned at the Murphy Laws Site have been very useful… for my Windows Live Messenger custom message.

I believe it is, at the moment, “All impossible failures, will happen at the test site.”

Some of my favourites:

  • If mathematically you end up with the incorrect answer, try multiplying by the page number.
  • If an experiment works, something has gone wrong.
  • When all else fails, read the instructions.

Find them here.

Civil Liberties

Civil Liberties vs. National Security book image

Civil Liberties vs. National Security in a Post-9/11 World (ISBN 1-59102-234-7):
This is an excellent book that I started reading recently. It discusses various issues surrounding the U.S. government following the events of September 11, 2001. The major sections in this book include:

  1. History of civil liberty issues in wartime (inc. an excerpt from another highly-recommended book, All the Laws but One)
  2. Domestic surveillance and the USA PATRIOT Act
  3. Racial profiling
  4. Torture
  5. Enemy combatants” and the detainment of foreigners
  6. Recent developments such as the Abu Ghraib prison scandal

More after the jump.

Importance of China

April 27th, 2008 | 1 Comment | Posted in Political Matters

I recently saw something while using StumbleUpon that really resonated with an important message I would like to point out: China is not only becoming the next super-power, it is already extremely powerful in the world simply due to trade. Ironic, isn’t it, that capitalism is what allows a semi-Communist country to hold some power over the rest of the nations?

Made in China

What would products cost if the US banned trade with China as part of “sanctions”? What would be the economic impact? How would consumers respond, or more importantly, how would 2+ billion Chinese people react?

Consider these questions, and get back to me (using the comments feature).

Conservatives violated elections law

Harper

Breaking news – Elections Canada claims the Conservative Party violated elections law when they spent money for campaigns in excess of the permitted limit.

This information should be covered by Nikola’s Musik, but it seems he’s not watching the news tonight.

Read more about this at the Toronto Star.

Viatron Owns You

April 19th, 2008 | 1 Comment | Posted in Video Matters

Since the response so far to this poll has been in the positive (saying you would watch videos that I embed here), below is another humorous video which parodies the producer’s experiences with Viacom.

“Viatron” is a fictitious name used to refer to Viacom, which took actions against the producer for some of his earlier music videos. This was due to an error with their automatic copyright protection program, which removed his works (ie. totally original); however, the accusations have now been dropped.

Watch this video in HD or download, on Vimeo.

So, yet another video by “smpfilms”. This one is going to take a lot of your time, but you have to watch it in full to appreciate its humour.

Vote on this poll: do you want to watch more videos in the future?

Distressed over stupidity

April 15th, 2008 | 2 Comments | Posted in Web Matters

I’m not usually the sort of person who would be extremely (emotionally) disturbed. If you know me, you will also know that I am not easily offended, either.

But what does cause me great distress is the fact that essentially every PersonalLog blog, and other sites hosted on the server (including the RHHS Music web site) have been filtered out by the York Region District School Board’s “Bessy” firewall.

Why, you might ask?

Simple: [here's the answer].

Because Smash.Weblog is a gaming site that deals exclusively with gaming and such entertainment, all of PersonalLog was filtered under Games. Yet PersonalLog itself and all of the other sites on the server have nothing to do with games.

Whose stupidity am I worried about?
